“Happy Days” by Samuel Beckett

Guest artist Holly Erin McCarthy opens The Provincetown Theater’s 2016 season with Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days”, running March 10 to 13.

Holly is a featured actor at numerous theatre companies, including Cape Rep Theatre, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre, Harwich Junior Theatre and the GEVA Theatre.  As Founding Executive Director of Theatre Under the Stairs, Holly has written and directed many plays for youth audiences.  Holly is known widely as a prolific and funny director, writer and producer of theatre on Cape Cod.  Anthony Teixeira will appear in the role of Willie.

Playwright Samuel Beckett is regarded as one of America’s true theatrical innovators.  His surrealist-absurdist plays call for specific and striking imagery and his text is praised as spare and poetic.  In “Happy Days” his lead character, Winnie, is buried to her waist in a mound.  By the end of the play, she has sunken into the mound almost entirely.  Winnie, in this static situation, can perform only an elaborate ballet of the hands and head using limited props, punctuating the performance with vocal trills, arias, wistful commentary.
