OLIVER, Lionel Bart’s musical based on the Charles Dickens’ classic “Oliver Twist” opened at the West End’s New Theater, (now the Noel Coward Theater) on June 30 1960. It was directed by Peter Coe and designed by Sean Kenny. With Ron Moody in the role of Fagin. The set was responsible for Bart missing the opening night performance. A revolve stuck and would not turn. Bart left the theater, for-seeing a disaster and did not return until he thought that the show was over. What he arrived to was the cast taking their 23rd curtain call. He was pushed onto the stage to be recognized and all he could say was “May the good Dickens forgive us.” “Oliver” ran in the West End for 2,618 performances.
