Provincetown’s ‘Sweeney Todd’ is a haunting devil’s playground

It’s difficult to overstate how much Drake has accomplished here, and the bar continues to be set ever higher, especially after his insanely good spring production of “August: Osage County.”
The acting of this “Sweeney Todd” cast is startlingly professional and persuasive, from the leads down to the ensemble. Tom Hewitt, a Broadway import, is an intense and riveting Sweeney …
Scenic designer and technical director Ellen Rousseau has created a dazzling center stage with bleacher seats raked up on either side, as she did in “August: Osage County.”
Sam Sewell’s sound design and effects (like a low-frequency rumble) are also thrilling, but high praise must be reserved for music director and arranger John Thomas, who does more with three musicians than might seem possible.
Perfectly paced (never a draggy moment) and damn near flawless in its execution…. this “Sweeney Todd” is a tribute to the directing talents of David Drake. Theater is now a happening thing in Provincetown, and the Provincetown Theater under his leadership is its throbbing heart. May we never get used to the level of excellence and inspiring creativity he consistently delivers — and may it never end.
