The Provincetown Theater is thrilled to announce that our 2020 PAPA recipient is trailblazing, gender-bending legend Mr. Charles Busch! Mr. Busch is the theatrical mastermind behind such smash hits as The Divine Sister, Psycho Beach Party, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Die, Mommie, Die!, and the longest-running comedy in off-Broadway history, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom.

Tune in at 5:30pm on Saturday August 15 as we stream the 2020 PAPA here on our website free-of-charge. As the PAPA is traditionally our most significant yearly fundraiser, this year we’ve got a fun new way where everyone can join in — and, hopefully, toss whatever they can into the hat!

Once again the PAPA will be hosted by our gracious supporters Ken Fulk and Kurt Wootton. In the past, seating was limited to sixty. But this summer, we’re expanding the PAPA into a coast-to-coast virtual “House Party”!

Whether toasting alone or gathering with loved ones, we’re inviting our friends, fans, sponsors and subscribers to host your very own PAPA party! To join in the celebration or donate, please click below:

2019 Recipient – Paula Vogel

2018 Recipient – Terrence McNally

Provincetown American Playwright Award

In 2018, the Provincetown Theater Artistic Director David Drake and the board of directors of the Provincetown Theater Foundation created the Provincetown American Playwright Award (PAPA). An annual tribute engaging Provincetown’s literary heritage as the Birthplace of Modern American Drama, the PAPA is presented each year to honor a living American writer whose contributions have paid invaluable witness to the American experience in ways that’ve nurtured and expanded the spirit of our souls – not only on our own country’s stages but on the world stage as well. The recipient is honored at a fundraising benefit each summer at the bayside home of longtime Provincetown arts supporters Ken Fulk & Kurt Wootton.
