As our country’s current cultural climate continues to be challenged by division and unrest, all the plays I’ve chosen for 2026 season are set in gatherings that offer their characters — and our audiences — a congregational experience that brings deep, relevant and longed-for healing and unity. This is true of all five of our productions this year.
Whether it’s the summer picnic at the Talley family homestead in Pulitzer Prize winner Lanford Wilson’s Fifth of July, the diverse stories of identity and belonging in the annual 4-Star Solo Show Festival, the joyous safe harbor for queer folk in Jon Richardson’s new musical The Jack of Hearts Club, the stressed-out urbanites seeking serenity at a “silence retreat” in Bess Wohl’s Drama Desk Award-winning Small Mouth Sounds, or Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner’s iconic collection of women embracing personal and societal change in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe — in our newly reimagined adaptation of the Tony Award-winning solo show for an all-female multi-actor cast — we’re thrilled to offer a roster of plays this year that aims to heal our wounds, fill our souls with hope, and reinvigorate our communal spirit.

The Jack of Hearts Club

Jon Richard’s new musical takes place at a rag-tag gay bar called the Jack of Hearts Club in Provincetown on the last day of the summer 1962. Richardson’s book, music and lyrics will transport you into the era of the early ‘60s and into the close-knit lives of a band of friends, lovers, mothers, and divas as they toast the end of the season in the place that very much feels like home. Each character finds themselves at a poignant, significant crossroad as they mount the club’s annual “good-bye” cabaret show.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe features a dynamic ensemble of women who bring to life a wide-ranging group of characters originally embodied by Lily Tomlin in her iconic solo performance. The play centers on Trudy, an eccentric observer who claims to receive messages from extraterrestrials studying humanity. Through Trudy’s offbeat perspective—and through a colorful array of women navigating careers, relationships, activism, and personal reinvention—the play humorously and poignantly examines the complexities of modern life.
